Also a place of worship for seamen (a sense apparently first used in U.S.)

Etymology: < the name of Slingsby Bethel (1617–97), sheriff of the city of London in 1680 (compare quot. a1734).
(See quot. a1734.)Apparently an isolated use.

a1734 R. North Examen (1740) 93 In the year 1680 Bethel and Cornish were chosen sheriffs. The former..kept no house, but lived upon chops, whence it is proverbial for not feasting to Bethel the city.
