Etymology: < round adj. + dance n. With sense 1(a) compare Middle French, French danse ronde (end of the 14th cent. in Middle French as dansse ronde ), and earlier round n.1 17a. In sense 2 after German Rundtanz (K. von Frisch 1923, in Zool. Jahrb., Abt. f. Allgemeine Zool. u. Physiol. der Tiere 40 31).
1. A dance in which the dancers move in a circular fashion; spec. (a) a folk dance in which the dancers form a circle (cf. ring dance n.); (b) a ballroom dance in which couples move in circles round the ballroom, such as a waltz or polka.
