Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French roser, rosier.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman roser (beginning of the 14th cent. or earlier), Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French rosier rose-bush (c1165; compare also Middle French rosière (feminine) rose-garden (1530 in Palsgrave)) < classical Latin rosārium rose-garden (see rosary n.). Compare Old Occitan rozier (end of the 12th cent.). Compare rosary n.Compare the following surnames, recorded in England: Gregorius le Rosier (1202; also 1206 as Gregorius le Roser ), Walterus le Roser (1206), Nel le Roser (1300). However, these examples may reflect currency of the Anglo-Norman word rather than the Middle English one, and may in fact arise immediately from the names of places derived from the French noun, either in England or (more probably) in France. With the first possibility perhaps compare:1330 Petition in Rotuli Parl. (1767–77) II. 36/2 Purchasa des tenauntes le dit Agnes trois mees..en Suthwerk, en un lieu appelle la Rosere, contre la Tour. With the second, compare the French surname Rosier , Rozier , apparently derived from the name of various towns and villages in France called Rosier or Le Rosier . With the β. forms compare -eer suffix1.
Chiefly poetic. Now rare.
A rose tree, a rosebush. Also: a branch of such a tree or bush.
