Etymology: < post-classical Latin roseae crucis (1614; < the genitive singular feminine of classical Latin roseus (see roseous adj.) + the genitive of crux : see cross n.) or rosae crucis (1614 or 1615; < the genitive of classical Latin rosa rose n.1 + the genitive of crux : see cross n.), in phrases such as fraternitas ac societas roseae crucis society and fraternity of the rose cross (1614), after German Orden des Rosenkreutzes order of the rose cross (1614). Compare post-classical Latin rosicrucia (1642), rosencruciana (a1654). Compare slightly earlier Rosy Cross n., and slightly later rose cross adj. at rose n.1 and adj.1 Compounds 2a.In β. forms after German Rosenkreuz.
A. n.
A member of a fictitious secret society identified in 17th-cent. and later texts as devoted to the study of metaphysical, mystical, and alchemical lore, such as the transmutation of metals, the prolongation of life, and the control of elements and elemental spirits. Also: a member of any of various modern organizations claiming to be identical with or derived from this fictitious society. The society and its supposed founder Christian Rosenkreutz are first mentioned in print in the anonymous Fama fraternitatis, dess Löblichen Ordens des Rosenkreutzes (Kassel, 1614). The Fama was a mystical allegory, not a report of a real body of men with a real founder. It was followed by a Confessio fraternitatis R. C. (Kassel, 1615), by Johann Valentin Andreae’s Chymische Hochzeit Christiani Rosencreutz anno 1459 (Strasburg, 1616), and by an extensive literature of responses and controversial works, one of the earliest being an anonymous Apocrisis seu responsio legitima ad Famam laudatissimae fraternitatis ac societatis Roseae Crucis (publisher unknown, 1614).
