Etymology: Origin unknown.Several theories have been proposed for the etymology of this word, but evidence to corroborate these is lacking. They include connection with Japanese janken , the name of the game (see janken n.) and Jan-ken-pon , the call accompanying it (compare quot. 1936 at janken n.). This poses phonological problems; however, some Japanese regional forms are closer to the English name than the standard Japanese name is, and it is likely that the word was subsequently altered through mishearing by English-speakers. Compare, e.g. (with initial r- ) Japanese regional (Oita) ryanken , ranken , (with medial -tch ) Japanese regional (Kagawa) jatchin or jitchin , and (with final -bo ) Japanese regional (Yamagata) jankembo ; final -bo is also found in Korean gawi-bawi-bo , the name of the game, lit. ‘scissors, rock, wrapping cloth’ and its equivalent Chinese regional (northern Zhejiang) jiāng jūn bò . The English word may have been influenced by folk-etymological association with the name of Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau (1725–1807), French general active in the American Revolution, although this would be difficult to reconcile with the date at which the word is first recorded in English and it is unclear why this individual should have become associated with the game.
