单词 rosha
释义

roshan.

Brit. /ˈrəʊʃə/, U.S. /ˈroʊʃə/
Forms:

α. 1800s– roosa, 1800s– rosa, 1800s– rousa, 1800s– roussa, 1800s– rusa.

β. 1800s– rosha, 1800s– rusha.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Hindi. Partly a borrowing from Marathi. Etymons: Hindi rūsā; Marathi rośẽ.
Etymology: Partly (in α. forms) < Hindi rūsā, and partly (in β. forms) < its cognate Marathi rośẽ < Sanskrit rohiṣa , denoting the grasses, apparently literally ‘red, reddish’ (although the semantic motivation is unclear), ultimately < the same Indo-European base as red adj.The ū in Hindi may have arisen by analogy with other plant names such as the unrelated Hindi rūs, ros, denoting a shrub. N.E.D. (1909) enters this under the double headword roosa, rusa, and gives the pronunciation as (rū·să) /ˈruːsə/.
1. In full rosha grass, †rosha paper grass. A South and South-East Asian grass, Cymbopogon martini, from which essential oils are obtained; esp. the form or variety of this grass from which palmarosa oil is obtained (= palmarosa n. 1).Another form or variety of this grass is known as ginger-grass (see ginger-grass n. 2a).
