Etymology: < rose n.1 + wort n.1, probably after early modern Dutch roosen-wortel (1554 (in the passage ultimately translated in quot. 1578 at sense 1) or earlier; Dutch rozenwortel ). Compare German Rosenwurz (18th cent. or earlier), Rosenwurzel (19th cent. or earlier). Compare roseroot n.
