Etymology: Apparently a variant of rug n.³, although both the affricate /dʒ/ and the vowel of the α. forms are difficult to explain.With the affricate perhaps compare ridge n.¹ 1c beside rig n.¹ 1b, although there is not an exact correspondence in either date or meaning.

Now rare.

A large piece of coarse cloth, (in early use) esp. as used as a bedcover. Cf. rug n.³ 2.
