Etymology: < the name of a fictitious poet, Gottlieb Biedermaier (see below).
Applied attributively to the period between 1815 and 1848 in Germany and to styles, furnishings, etc., characteristic of that period, esp. to a type of furniture derived from the French Empire style. Also transferred with derogatory implication: conventional, bourgeois.
