Etymology: Apparently originally (in α. forms) a variant of rowen n. (compare β. forms at that entry) by association with row adj. and hence rough adj. With the β. forms compare -ing suffix1.
Originally English regional. In later use also U.S. regional.
The coarse crop of grass that appears after mowing; (also) the stubble left after mowing or reaping. Cf. eddish n. 2, rowen n. 1.
