Etymology: < French rose Pompadour (1843 or earlier, although probably much earlier: see quot. 1872) < rose rose n.1 + the name of the Marquise de Pompadour (see pompadour n., adj., and adv.). Compare earlier rose du Barry n. Compare also slightly earlier Pompadour pink n. and adj. at pompadour n., adj., and adv. Compounds 2.
= rose du Barry n. Cf. Pompadour pink n. and adj. at pompadour n., adj., and adv. Compounds 2.Considered by some authorities to be the more correct term.
