Etymology: < romper n. + -ing suffix¹.The practice was probably so called because the Shankill Butchers, a notorious Ulster Protestant paramilitary gang during the 1970s, referred to the room at the Lawnbrook Social Club in Belfast where they attacked their victims as the romper room , in allusion to the television show Romper Room (see romper room n. at romper n. Compounds), a Northern Ireland version of which was produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Compare quot. 2005.

In Northern Ireland: a savage beating or other brutal attack carried out by Loyalist paramilitaries.
