Origin: Apparently a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: ratton n.
Etymology: Apparently a variant of ratton n., with alteration of the vowel in the first syllable apparently after similar forms of rat n.1 (see also forms from other West Germanic languages at that entry).
Chiefly Scottish and English regional (northern).
