Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: Latin rota , -fer comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin rota wheel (see rota n.) + -fer comb. form, after Italian rotifero (1767 in the source of quot. 1787). Compare French rotifère (1775 or earlier) and post-classical Latin rotifer (1791 or earlier). Compare also Rotifera n.
Zoology.
A minute or microscopic animal of the class or phylum Rotifera; a wheel animalcule.These were among the microscopic animals first observed by the Dutch microscopist van Leeuwenhoek in 1676, and described by him in letters to the Royal Society in 1702–5 and 1713, though they were not at first clearly distinguished from ciliates of the genus Vorticella.
