Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Rothschild.
Etymology: < the names of Mayer Amschel Rothschild (1744–1812) and his son Nathan Mayer Rothschild, German Jewish financiers from Frankfurt.M. A. Rothschild entered the financial profession in the 1790s; he worked for the court of the Elector of Hesse from 1803 and subsequently also for other members of the European aristocracy. N. M. Rothschild (1777–1836) emigrated to England and founded the bank N. M. Rothschild & Sons in the City of London in 1811.
Now rare.
An extremely wealthy person; a millionaire. Occasionally attributive. Also to come the Rothschild (colloquial): to pretend to be rich (see come v. Phrases 2b(b)). Cf. later Mouton-Rothschild n.
