The dispute came to a head when the Parliament of the newly unified Kingdom of Italy declared Rome its capital on 27 March 1861 and was not resolved until June 1929 when the Vatican acknowledged Italian sovereignty over the former Papal States and Italy recognized papal sovereignty over the Vatican City, under the terms of the Lateran Treaty.
