Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch rolwagen.

Etymology: < Dutch rolwagen (although this is apparently only recorded slightly later in this sense in dictionaries of Dutch: 1685), apparently a specific use of rolwagen roll-wagon n., although the semantic motivation is not entirely clear (perhaps so called with reference to the cylindrical shape of the vase; compare rouleau n. 4).It has alternatively been suggested that the word might perhaps be used with reference to a motif of a figure seated in a cart, which apparently is a frequently occurring element in the decoration of this kind of vase.

A kind of Chinese cylindrical porcelain vase. In later use also: a Dutch imitation of this.
