单词 roloway
释义

rolowayn.

Brit. /ˈrəʊləweɪ/, /ˈrɒləweɪ/, U.S. /ˈroʊləˌweɪ/, /ˈrɑləˌweɪ/
Forms: 1700s– roloway, 1900s– rolloway.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin roloway.
Etymology: < scientific Latin roloway, former specific name (in Simia roloway ; F. Allamand in Buffon Hist. Naturelle (new ed., 1771) XV. 77), perhaps < a language of West Africa (compare quot. 1781, paraphrasing Allamand), although a likely donor form has not been traced, or perhaps < a mistaken use of Sinhala riḷavā rilawa n. (compare earlier rillow n.: see note). Compare German Roloway (1780 or earlier), French roloway (1789 in Buffon, or earlier). In the late 18th cent., continental European scientists sometimes used equivalents of this name (German Roloway , Dutch Roloway ) to denote a monkey of Ceylon. The (reddish-brown) South Asian rilawa is not very similar to the (black and white) African roloway, but the following shows use of German Roloway following a description of a different (black) Asian monkey:1795 Neue Schriften der Ges. Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin 1 216 Auf Ceylon nennt man ihn auch Roloway [in Ceylon, he is also called roloway]... Die Europäer nennen freylich diese Art Affen Rolloway, sie verwirren aber die Arten [the Europeans call this species of monkey rolloway, but they confuse the species].Compare also the following quots., which make the assumed connection explicit. However, all of these are examples are later than the original uses of the name in English, French, or German, so it is unclear whether the name is a result of the confusion of species, or vice versa (quot. 17962 is from a review of the source of quot. 1795).1796 J. C. Wolf Reizen naar Ceilon 134 (note) De Rolloway of Palatinaffe..woont ook in Ginna [the roloway or palatin-monkey..also lives in Guinea]1796 Allgemeine Literatur-Zeitung 11 May 323 Der Rilowa der Singalesen (Simia Roloway).
A Diana monkey of the subspecies Cercopithecus diana roloway, found in parts of tropical West Africa and distinguished from the typical Diana monkey by its longer beard. More fully roloway monkey, roloway guenon.
