释义

rosaceousadj.

Brit. /rə(ʊ)ˈzeɪʃəs/, U.S. /roʊˈzeɪʃəs/

Etymology: < classical Latin rosāceus made of roses, in post-classical Latin also rose-coloured (from 13th cent. in British sources in gutta rosacea (see gutta rosacea n. at gutta n.1 Compounds); < rosa rose n.1 + -āceus : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix. In sense 1 partly (in later use) after scientific Latin Rosaceae, family name ( A. L. de Jussieu Genera plantarum (1789) 334), use as noun of feminine plural of classical Latin rosāceus (see -ae suffix). In sense 3 after rosacea n. Compare French rosacé resembling a rose (1694), Italian rosaceo rose-coloured (17th cent., rare), characteristic of the order Rosaceae (1802).Scientific Latin rosacea is attested both in botany (from 1753 as a specific epithet; compare sense 1) and in zoology (from 1758 as a specific name; also from 1758 as rosaceus ; compare quot. 1783 at sense 2a).
