单词 rorqual
释义

rorqualn.

Brit. /ˈrɔːkw(ə)l/, U.S. /ˈrɔrkw(ə)l/
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French rorqual.
Etymology: < French rorqual (1789) < Norwegian regional (Nynorsk) røyrkval (also †røyderkval ; compare (Bokmål) røyrhval ), cognate with Old Icelandic reyðarhvalr < reyðar- , combining form of reyðr kind of whale (apparently used for more than one species), arctic char (Norwegian røyr , in Nynorsk also as †røyder , now only in sense ‘arctic char’; < the Scandinavian base of rauðr red adj.) + hvalr whale n.Since the whales are not red or even reddish, the semantic motivation for the name is unclear. It has been suggested that it refers to the animals as providers of red meat and was originally used to avoid a taboo on mentioning the whales' name at sea (see W. B. Lockwood in Maal og minne 1-2 (1994) 33-4).
Any of various baleen whales constituting the family Balaenopteridae, having a streamlined profile, a small dorsal fin, and pleated skin under the throat; esp. (in full common rorqual) the fin whale, Balaenoptera physalus, and (in full lesser rorqual) the minke whale, B. acutorostrata. Frequently with distinguishing word.Sibbald's rorqual: see the first element.
