Etymology: In α. forms < the genitive of the name of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845–1923), German physicist, who discovered X-rays in 1895 + the plural of ray n.5 In β. forms < the name of Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen + the plural of ray n.5 Compare German Röntgenstrahlen , plural noun (1896). Compare X-ray n., and also later Roentgen-rayed adj., Roentgen-raying n., Roentgen-ray v.Röntgen reported on his discovery in a paper published in 1896 ( Sitzungsber. der Phys.-Med. Ges. zu Würzburg 1895 132); the name Röntgenstrahlen was proposed by A. von Kölliker (1817–1905), Swiss histologist and physiologist, at a lecture with demonstrations given by Röntgen on 23 Jan. 1896.
Now chiefly historical.
X-rays. Also in singular.The singular use is now largely confined to attributive uses, as in Roentgen ray therapy.
