Etymology: < Brazilian Portuguese rodízio menu offering an unlimited amount of food for a fixed price (1979 or earlier, chiefly in churrascaria rodízio denoting a restaurant offering such a menu: see below), transferred use of Portuguese rodízio rotation, alternation, itself an extended use of rodízio waterwheel (15th cent. as †rrodízio ; < roda wheel (first half of the 12th cent.; < classical Latin rōta : see rota n.) + -ízio , variant of -ício , suffix forming nouns < classical Latin -itium -ice suffix1).The use with reference to a restaurant serving this type of barbecue meal is apparently unparalleled in Brazilian Portuguese, where such a restaurant is called churrascaria rodízio (for the first element, see churrascaria n.).
A type of Brazilian (or Portuguese) restaurant serving a large variety of grilled and roasted meats, frequently offering diners an unlimited amount of food for a fixed price. Also: a meal of this sort.
