Origin: A borrowing from Virginia Algonquian. Etymon: Virginia Algonquian rokohamin.
Etymology: < Virginia Algonquian rokohamin (pronounced /roːhkahamən/), lit. ‘that which is ground soft (with a pestle)’ ( < /roːhk-/ soft + /-ah/ to make (so) with a tool + /-amən/ that (inanimate) which is; compare Munsee lohkhámən flour), with alteration of the ending by association with English hominy n. Compare earlier nocake n.In Virginia Algonquian, rokohamin , which is ground after parching, is contrasted with uskatahomen , which is ground raw (see hominy n.).
U.S. (originally North American).
Roasted and finely ground maize, often carried as a provision by travellers. Also called nocake, parched corn, pinole. Cf. hominy n.In later use (as in quots. 1901 and 2006) often used erroneously for hominy n.
