Etymology: < Anglo-Norman ruinne, roin, roinne, Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French roigne, Middle French rogne (c1130 in Anglo-Norman as ruinne; French rogne ), of uncertain origin; perhaps < an unrecorded post-classical Latin form *ronea , alteration of classical Latin arānea spider (see arain n.), perhaps after rubeus red (see rubeola n.) or rūbīgō rust, blight (see rubiginous adj.). Compare Occitan ronha (c1200), Catalan ronya (13th cent.), Spanish roña (late 15th cent. or earlier), Portuguese ronha (1609), Italian rogna (a1306). Compare roinous adj., roynish adj.
Obsolete.
A scab; a patch of rough, scabby skin. Also: mange.

Etymology: < Anglo-Norman ruignier to mutter, to growl, to roar (13th cent. in an apparently isolated attestation, although compare Middle French, French †rongnonner (15th cent.; French rognonner ), French rogner (19th cent.), all in the same sense) < a Gallo-Romance base of imitative origin; compare Old Occitan renar to growl, to mutter, to croak. Perhaps compare earlier groin v.1
Obsolete.
