单词 rodentia
释义

Rodentian.

Brit. /rə(ʊ)ˈdɛntɪə/, /rə(ʊ)ˈdɛnʃə/, U.S. /roʊˈdɛn(t)ʃ(i)ə/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Rodentia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Rodentia, plural noun (1802 or earlier: see quot. 1802), literally ‘gnawers’, specific use as noun of plural of classical Latin rōdent- , rōdēns rodent adj., after French rongeurs , plural noun (1800 in the passage translated in quot. 1802). Compare scientific Latin Rodentes, plural noun ( F. Vicq d'Azyr Système anatomique des quadrupèdes (1792) xcvii). In the early 19th cent. the Latin term rodentia was widely used in an English context as the name of the group that Cuvier called les rongeurs (part of the ‘ Glires’ of Linnaeus). Its taxonomic use as an order name is formally attributed to T. E. Bowdich in Anal. Nat. Classif. Mammalia (1821) 7 (based on Cuvier's Règne animal (1817)).
Zoology.
