Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Cree lexical item. Etymons: rocky adj.¹, mountain n.

Etymology: < rocky adj.¹ + the plural of mountain n., after Canadian French regional (Métis French) les Montagnes des Roches (1752) or its model Cree asinîwaciya, plural of asinîwaciy < asinî-, combining form of asiniy stone, rock + waciy mountain. Compare also French les Montagnes Rocheuses (1790 or earlier).The name was apparently introduced into English by A. Mackenzie in 1793, but the original version of his journal does not survive (compare quot. 1801). Mackenzie used the name synonymously with Stony Mountains n. at stony adj.
