1. Roman History. An officer responsible for summoning senators to Rome from the countryside.

1755 W. Guthrie tr. Cicero Cato Major in Offices 260 Curius and other Heroes were summon'd from the Country to the Senate, and thence it was that the summoning Officers were called Viatores or Road-men.
2003 B. J. Incigneri Gospel to Romans ii. 79 Columella..recommended a nearby estate for relief from a busy day, and spoke of senators being summoned by ‘road-men’ (viatores) from their villas to the Senate in earlier times.
2. A person who builds or repairs roads. Also in later use: a person employed to keep the streets clean; a road sweeper.
