Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin Robur Carolinum; Latin Robur Caroli.
Etymology: In α. forms < post-classical Latin Robur Carolinum (E. Halley Catalogus stellarum australium (1679); < classical Latin rōbur (see robur n.) + post-classical Latin Carolinum , neuter of Carolinus of or relating to Charles < Carolus Charles + classical Latin -īnus -ine suffix1, in allusion to the Royal Oak (see etymology at royal oak n.). In β. forms < post-classical Latin Robur Caroli < classical Latin rōbur + post-classical Latin Caroli, genitive of Carolus Charles. The form Robur Caroli II (to be read as Robur Caroli Secundi) occurs in J. E. Bode Uranographia (1801) 19/1. The use of the Latin genitive case form as a postmodifier in star names is a practice that originated in post-classical Latin.
Astronomy. Now historical.
(The name of) a former constellation of the southern hemisphere, the Royal Oak, created out of stars that were part of the former constellation Argo. Formerly also (in form Roboris Caroli) †used as a postmodifier in the names of stars belonging to this constellation (obsolete). The name was not widely accepted and was rejected by Lacaille in his more comprehensive mid-18th-cent. mapping of the stars of the southern hemisphere.
