Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps from a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Rob , -let suffix.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < Rob, pet form of the male forenames Robert (see Robert n.1) and Robin (see robin n.1) + -let suffix, after the name of Robin Goodfellow (see Robin Goodfellow n.). Perhaps compare post-classical Latin Robinetus , the name of a goblin who makes mischief at night in a post-classical Latin story entitled De Robineto , recorded in a British manuscript of the 14th cent. (see J. Wright Select. Latin Stories (1842) 38). Compare earlier hobgoblin n.
Obsolete. rare.
A goblin which leads people astray in the dark. Only in roblet-led.
