Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish roble.
Etymology: < Spanish roble oak (c1250; also as †robre ), subsequently applied to various Latin American and Californian trees having hard, heavy wood < classical Latin rōbor- , rōbur oak tree (see robur n.). Compare French rouvre (1552 in Middle French; 1401 as roure), Old Occitan rover (13th cent.), royre (1350), rore (15th cent.), Portuguese roble (1720; 14th cent. as †robre), Italian rovere (early 14th cent.).
Any of various Latin American and Californian trees having hard, heavy wood used for construction, shipbuilding, etc.; esp. (a) the valley oak of California, Quercus lobata; (b) the Central and South American timber tree Platymiscium pinnatum (family Fabaceae); (c) a West Indian species of catalpa, C. longissima (now rare); (d) (more fully roble beech) a species of southern beech, Nothofagus obliqua. Also: the timber of any of these trees.
