Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Or (ii) from a proper name. Etymons: Robinson Crusoe n.; proper name Robinson.
Etymology: Either shortened < Robinson Crusoe n. or directly < the name of Robinson Crusoe (see Robinson Crusoe n.). Compare German Robinson (1796 in the passage translated in quot. 1800, or earlier), French Robinson (1857).
