单词 acroclinium
释义

acrocliniumn.

Brit. /ˌakrə(ʊ)ˈklɪnɪəm/, U.S. /ˌækrəˈklɪniəm/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Acroclinium.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Acroclinium, genus name (A. Gray 1852, in Hooker's Jrnl. Bot. 4 270) < acro- acro- comb. form + ancient Greek κλίνη couch (see clino- comb. form) + classical Latin -ium (see -y suffix4), so called on account of the acutely conical receptacle.
A plant of the former genus Acroclinium (now included in Rhodanthe), of the family Asteraceae ( Compositae), which comprises herbaceous annuals native chiefly to Australia; esp. a plant of one of the numerous cultivated varieties grown widely for their persistent flowers (everlastings), which are typically red, pink or white, and often used dried in arrangements. Also (in form Acroclinium): the former genus itself.
