释义

Rittmastern.

Brit. /ˈrɪtmɑːstə/, /ˈrɪtmastə/, U.S. /ˈrɪtmæstər/
Forms:

α. 1500s–1600s Reytmaster, 1600s Raitmaister (Scottish), 1600s Reetmaster (Scottish), 1600s Reutmaister (Scottish).

β. 1500s–1600s Ritmaister, 1600s Rithmaster, 1600s Rytmaister, 1600s Rytmaster, 1600s 1800s– Rittmaster, 1600s–1700s Ritmaster.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Dutch. Partly a borrowing from German. Etymons: Dutch ritmeester; German Rittmeister.
Etymology: < Dutch ritmeester and (in later use) its cognate German Rittmeister (see Rittmeister n.), with remodelling of the second element after master n.1 Compare later Rittmeister n. Compare earlier rotmaster n., with which it sometimes seems to be confused. The α. forms all come from texts relating to the Netherlands, but no equivalent forms with a long vowel or a diphthong in the first syllable have been found in Dutch. Compare Middle Low German rīdemēster , also (probably showing High German influence) rētmēster , reitmeister overseer of military stables, cavalry officer, town official, and the similarly-formed German †Reitmeister cavalry officer, town official with horse-related or military duties < reiten ride v. (compare Middle Low German rēt , reit unit of cavalry: see road n.) + Meister master n.1; the semantic range of these words suggests merger with or influence from Middle High German reitemeister town official with financial duties (German †Reitmeister ) < reiten to reckon (see rede v.2) + Meister master n.1 (compare also early modern Dutch reedmeester).
(A title of) a captain in a cavalry regiment.
