Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymons: Japanese ritsu, Risshū.
Etymology: < Japanese ritsu (undated in this sense; 7th cent. as a Buddhist term (in a compound); 10th cent. with specific reference to vinaya) and (in β. forms) the fuller form Risshū (13th cent. or earlier; contracted form of *Ritsu-shū , literally ‘Ritsu sect’; compare β. forms) < a Middle Chinese compound (compare Chinese lǜzōng < rule, law, principle (see n.1) + zōng religion, sect) used to translate Sanskrit vinaya Vinaya n.In earliest use via German †Rit (now Ritsu ), †Rissiu (both in the source translated in quot. 1727). The form Rit reflects an earlier pronunciation of the consonant in Japanese; the final vowel is omitted in this transliteration because it is pronounced very weakly.
Buddhism. Now chiefly historical.
An early school of Buddhism, typically concerned with the study of monastic discipline and ordination rites.The Ritsu tradition originated in the Tang dynasty and flourished after being introduced to Japan in the 8th cent.

2002 O. G. Lidin Tanegashima 196 Jionji was founded in 806 and belonged to the Ritsu school of Buddhism.
