Etymology: < Japanese ritsu (undated in this sense; 7th cent. as a Buddhist term (in a compound); 10th cent. with specific reference to vinaya) and (in β. forms) the fuller form Risshū (13th cent. or earlier; contracted form of *Ritsu-shū , literally ‘Ritsu sect’; compare β. forms) < a Middle Chinese compound (compare Chinese lǜzōng < lǜ rule, law, principle (see lü n.¹) + zōng religion, sect) used to translate Sanskrit vinaya Vinaya n.In earliest use via German †Rit (now Ritsu ), †Rissiu (both in the source translated in quot. 1727).
