Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian ritenuto, ritenere.
Etymology: Apparently < Italian ritenuto (although this is not dated in dictionaries of Italian), use as adverb of past participle of ritenere (late 13th cent.) < classical Latin retinēre retain v. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation (ritenū·to) /riːtɛˈnuːtəʊ/.
