Etymology: Apparently < Rita (the nickname of Marguerite Panizzon, an early tester of the drug, the wife of Leandro Panizzon, Italian-born Swiss chemist, who first synthesized methylphenidate in 1944) + -in suffix¹, with insertion of -l- for euphony.

Pharmacology.

A proprietary name for: the drug methylphenidate hydrochloride, a central nervous system stimulant now used esp. in the treatment of children with behavioural disorders characterized by hyperactivity and distractibility.
