An antibiotic structurally related to vancomycin, obtained from the fermentation products of the actinomycete Nocardia lurida and now used mainly for the laboratory investigation of blood platelet function; (more fully ristocetin A, ristocetin B) either of the two closely related compounds of which this antibiotic is a mixture.

1957 W. E. Grundy et al. in Antibiotics Ann. 1956–7 687 A new antibiotic that has been given the generic name ristocetin was isolated from the fermentation beer of an actinomycete. The antibiotic, which is active against gram-positive bacteria and mycobacteria, was found to consist of two compounds that have been named ristocetin A and ristocetin B.
