Etymology: < the genitive of the name of Antoine Joseph Risso (also in Italian form Antonio Giuseppe Risso; 1777–1845), French naturalist (born in Nice, then part of the Duchy of Savoy) + dolphin n. Compare the former scientific Latin species name Delphinus rissoanus (A. G. Desmarest Mammalogie (1822) ii. 579).

A large pale grey dolphin, Grampus griseus (family Delphinidae), having a rounded, beakless snout and long black flippers, found in both temperate and tropical seas. Also called grampus.

1870 Athenæum 12 Feb. 360/1 A female of ‘Risso's Dolphin’, Grampus Rissoanus, nearly 12 feet long, was caught on the coast near Plymouth on the 28th of February.

1924 S. F. Harmer in Nature 12 Apr. 532/1 Among the true dolphins (Delphinidae) the caa'ing whale (Globicephala melaena) and Risso's dolphin (Grampus griseus)..are known to subsist, partly at least, on cuttlefish.

1960 G. Maxwell Ring of Bright Water v. 62 Risso's dolphin..is in fact the commonest of all the lesser whales to visit the Hebrides in summer.

2008 Independent 3 Sept. 6/1 Also washed up was a baby Risso's dolphin.
