Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: < early Scandinavian (compare Swedish regional resma ear of corn (especially of oats), Danish regional rusme , rusne stalk or head (of oats), a derivative formation < the same base as Old Swedish ris , Old Danish ris rice n.1, although the reason for the difference in the stem vowel in Danish is unclear).
Now English regional (northern), Scottish, and Irish English (northern).
