Forms: 1800s rishle (Scottish), 1800s rissle (Scottish), 1800s ristle, 1800s– risel (west midlands), 1800s– risle, 1900s– rystle (Staffordshire).
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from early Scandinavian. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: rice n.1, -el suffix1.
Etymology: Either the reflex of a borrowing < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic hrísla twig or sprig of a branch, Norwegian risla branch, cluster, small bush, ear of wheat, spray of flowers, reflecting a diminutive formation < the base of Old Icelandic hrís rice n.1), or independently < rice n.1 + -el suffix1.
Scottish and English regional (west midlands).
A rod or stick, esp. one used as a support for climbing plants.
