单词 ripuarian
释义

Ripuariann.adj.

Brit. /ˌrɪpjʊˈɛːrɪən/, U.S. /ˌrɪp(j)əˈwɛriən/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Ripuarius , Ribuarius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Ripuarius (also Ribuarius) (7th cent. or earlier; 6th cent. as Riparius , apparently by early association with classical Latin rīpārius riparious adj.; apparently reflecting a self-designation < the Germanic base of Middle Dutch rīpe riverbank (see ripe n.3) + the Germanic base of -ware suffix; compare -ary suffix1) + -an suffix. Compare later Riparian n.2, Riparian adj.2, and also Ripuary adj. and the French parallels cited at that entry. With sense A. 2 compare German Ripuarisch (noun), in same sense (1908 or earlier), use as noun of ripuarisch , adjective (see below). In sense B. 3 after German ripuarisch (1835 (in Jacob Grimm) or earlier in this sense; 1742 or earlier designating the code of law observed by the Ripuarian Franks). In Ripuarian Law (see sense B. 1) after post-classical Latin Lex Ripuaria (7th cent.; also Lex Ribuaria); compare French Loi Ripuaire (1690)).
