Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: ripieno adj., -ist suffix.
Etymology: < ripieno adj. + -ist suffix, after German Ripienist (1806 in the passage translated in compare quot. 1820, or earlier). Compare Italian ripienista (1843 or earlier), French ripieniste (1855 or earlier; < Italian).
Music.
In baroque music: an instrumental (or vocal) performer who only plays (or sings) to reinforce the full ensemble, as opposed to one of the principal performers (concertists).
