Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ripicola , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin ripicola (1820 in zoology as a specific name; < classical Latin rīpa riverbank (see ripa n.2) + -colus : see -colous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare French ripicole (1820).
Ecology. rare before mid 20th cent.
Living or growing on the banks of rivers and streams; relating to or characteristic of the transitional zone between dry land and running water; = riparian adj.1 1b.
