单词 riphaean
释义

RiphaeanRipheanadj.

Brit. /ˈrɪfɪən/, /ˈrʌɪfɪən/, U.S. /ˈrɪfiən/, /ˈraɪfiən/
Forms: 1500s– Riphean, 1500s– Riphaean, 1500s– Ryphean, 1500s– Ryphaean, 1600s– Rhiphaean, 1600s– Rhiphean, 1600s– Rhyphean, 1600s 1800s– Rifean.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Rīphaeus , Rīpaeus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Rīphaeus, variant (in Virgil and some other authors) of Rīpaeus, Rhīpaeus (see Rhipaean adj.) + -an suffix. The -ph- of classical Latin Rīphaeus (where the Greek etymon has -π- ) probably reflects a practice in classical Latin of spelling some words (regardless of their origin) with ph in place of p (similarly ch in place of c , th in place of t ), in imitation of the transcription of Greek ϕ by ph (χ by ch , θ by th ), as in e.g. triumphus triumph n. In Riphaean mountains after classical Latin Rīphaeī montes . Compare Old English þa beorgas Riffen (also Riffin ) and Riffeng (also Riffing ) þa beorgas in the Old English translation of Orosius Hist. and one of its geographical interpolations (the form Riffen probably derives from post-classical Latin Rifei (variant of Riphaei ) by scribal error, with Riffeng , Riffing perhaps showing subsequent alteration after -ing suffix3). Compare also the following occurrence of Latin montes Riphei in a Middle English context:a1398 J. Trevisa tr. Bartholomaeus Anglicus De Proprietatibus Rerum (BL Add. 27944) (1975) II. xiv. xxxi. 711 Hiȝe mounteyns þat ben in þe hede of Germanye ben yclepid montes Riphei... And þei ben yclepid Alpes.
