Etymology: < French robe de style (1903 or earlier in robe de style Louis XVI , literally ‘gown in the Louis XVI style’; compare quot. 1909) < robe robe n.1 + de de prep. + style style n. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives only the partly naturalized pronunciation (rōb də stīl) /rɔːb də stiːl/.
A type of evening gown with a tight bodice and a long bouffant skirt, fashionable esp. in the 1920s and 1930s. Also figurative.Credited to the French fashion designer Jeanne Lanvin (1867–1946).
