Origin: From a proper name. Etymons: proper name Rioja, La Rioja.
Etymology: < Rioja, also La Rioja (Spanish La Rioja , formerly also La Rioxa ), the name of an autonomous community in northern Spain, where the wine is produced. Compare Spanish Rioja Rioja wine (1901 or earlier). With Rioja wine at sense 1 compare Spanish vino de la Rioja (1779 or earlier). O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (rio·ha) /riˈoxa/.
