Etymology: < Spanish róbalo (c1381 denoting the sea bass, 1843 or earlier denoting a snook), probably a variant of an unattested Spanish parallel ( < lobo lobo n. + -arro , augmentative suffix) of Catalan llobarro sea bass (1599). Compare French loup pike, sea bass, catfish (see loup n.⁴), classical Latin lupus bass (see lupus n.), and also earlier sea-wolf n., wolf-fish n., all apparently named in allusion to the voracious feeding habits of these fish.

Any of several snooks (genus Centropomus, family Centropomidae) occurring in the Gulf of Mexico; esp. the common C. undecimalis, a large edible game fish often found in brackish water.
