Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Rob Roy.
Etymology: < Rob Roy (Scottish Gaelic Raib Ruadh, more fully Raibeart Ruadh, lit. ‘Red Robert’), the nickname of Robert MacGregor (1671–1734), Scottish Jacobite cattle-dealer, freebooter, and folk hero whose story was popularized beyond Scotland by Walter Scott's novel of the same name (1817).
