Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: russel n.1
Etymology: Probably a variant of russel n.1 (although this is apparently first attested later in the relevant sense), perhaps with assimilation of liquids (r..l > r..r ), or perhaps showing suffix substitution; perhaps compare also French rousseur redness, reddish colour (second half of the 12th cent. in Old French as rousor ; < roux red (see rouse adj.) + -or -or suffix). The forms with final -t, -d apparently show an excrescent final plosive. Two alternative etymologies have been suggested, but both present problems. N.E.D. (1909) suggests a derivation < rid, variant of red adj. + -ser (in groser n.); however, the earliest forms of the word do not support this suggestion. Alternatively, Sc. National Dict. at Rizzar takes the word as an alteration of russet n. after groser n. However, this poses semantic problems, as russet n. is not attested with reference to berries, and groser n. does not have the sense ‘currant’, only ‘gooseberry’ (although compare French groseille rouge redcurrant (1761 or earlier; < groseille currant (see groser n.) + rouge rouge adj.)). Sc. National Dict. (at Rizzar) records the word as still in use in north-eastern and central (especially east central) Scotland in 1968.
Scottish.
More fully red rizzer: a redcurrant bush, Ribes rubrum; a fruit of this plant. Frequently attributive, as rizzer-berry, rizzer-bush. Also: (in full white rizzer) a whitecurrant fruit or bush; (in full black rizzer) a blackcurrant fruit or bush.
