rivuletn.Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Probably partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Probably partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: riveret n.; Latin rīvulus , -et suffix1; Italian rivoletto. Etymology: Probably partly an alteration of riveret n., after classical Latin rīvulus Rivulus n. and (in later use) perhaps also Italian rivoletto (see below), partly < classical Latin rīvulus Rivulus n. + -et suffix1, and partly (in later use: compare β. forms) < Italian rivoletto small river, small stream, brook (although this is first attested later: a1642; < rivolo , in same sense (a1320; < classical Latin rīvulus Rivulus n.) + -etto -et suffix1). Compare post-classical Latin rivuleta (13th cent. in a British source). In sense 2 apparently so called on account of the white wavy markings on its wings.Italian rivoletto is much less common than its synonym rivolo. 1. the world > the earth > water > rivers and streams > stream > [noun] > rivulet or runnel α. 1577 W.
